What is Otolaryngology?

Otolaryngology is a medical specialty like general surgery, pediatrics, etc.
Full name is Oto-Rhino-Laryngology and recently Head and Neck Surgery was added.
It deals with the diseases of the ear (Oto), nose (Rhino) and throat (Laryngo).
The factor that unites these distant regions of anatomy is the unique mucosa that covers all of these organs. So, the mucosal lining of your middle ear cavity is the same one that covers your nose and sinuses, your mouth, esophagus, trachea, and bronchi.
The factor that makes ENT special are the various specific instruments that we use for examination and treatment. Since we are dealing with dark, deep and narrow holes, we need good light and specialized methods of investigation.
